As part of its Fall/Winter 2011-2012 Collection, French luxury brand Hermès has worked with French graffiti artist Kongo. The artist created several scarves in his signature style, featuring an all-over tag design. Available at Hermès boutiques around the globe now, part of the proceeds will be donated to Kongo’s graffiti collective kosmopolis, which supports young artists.
ARTST is a site I joined about 3 or 4 years ago. I believed it was conceived by part, if not whole, by Pharrell Williams as a way to reveal talented artists and/or allow people to post art of any kind. Any type: various media, photographs, drawings, paintings, video and many subcategories of each. It's sort of like a blog in a way.
Anywho I was browsing around and I stumbled on this graffiti sketch. I think it's ill.
I was browsing through the As One site again and I found this logo, something I'm assuming he designed. The aesthetics are nice on this one. Nice to look at. I was trying to find the site of this label but, I had no luck on that. I'll keep trying and as soon as I can I'll post the link.
The debate toward whether or not graffiti is vandalism/crime or what have you is ongoing. That's something that I highly doubt will ever resolve itself. At times I'm on the fence but, I love the stuff. I don't agree with the portion that may get a little derogatory or get a bit gang related. It's funky though, because even with that, I like the artistry of it all. It's always intrigued me. The distorted lettering, the images, the colors, various sizes, the technicality, the simplicity, everything. I've dabbled in it a bit and I have to say that I pull it off OK sometimes. Here's a picture of something I did a little while ago.

Basically, I love this art form. Here's a site showcasing graffiti from various parts of the states as well as across the globe. Some good stuff.
*Note, how I came upon this topic in the first place was due to my YouTube browsing, again. I'm subscribed to both JP Art's OTHER channel and his original Patterson Art. He posted a video of his response to this question from a girl building a documentary. Some may consider it lengthy, but it's very interesting and draws you in if you really pay attention.
vandalism - willful or malicious destruction or defacement of public or private property
art - (4a definition) the conscious use of skill and creative imagination especially in the production of aesthetic objects; also: works so produced
Graffiti: Art or Vandalism?
I feel that the majority of you will agree with me in that this is a commonly proposed question amongst art goers and those who see this form of expression as unnecessary and destructive. Personally, I love graffiti though I'm not too good. I'm trying to hone my skills in that regard, but that's for another day. In this video, Jacob makes tons of valid points. One that stood out to me the most is where he mentions the right for the owner or owners of that property or object to enforce their right not to have it tagged or marked with whatever image or distorted lettering that person so chooses. Another logical point he brought to the forefront was that graffiti is at most times solely considered art or vandalism when more often than not it is both.
So if this artful skill is displayed in what is considered or seen to be an inappropriate place then it's not art? If it is the same form of expression displayed in an appropriate area then it is art? Again a very debatable question that will no doubt remain a hot topic and will generate an in depth discussion whenever it arises.
