What Song Are You Listening To?

“What song are you listening to?” This is a question that the majority of the world has been asked. Personally, I like it when people ask me this question. Most of the time this leads into conversation regarding the type of music that “young people” like to listen to today, and how the youth now are different from when they where young.

Depending on when you catch me, I could be listening to just about anything which may seem cliché but it’s true. Now I could simply list the names of various artists that I like but I don’t think I will. Instead, I’d like to talk about the feelings that are generated inside of us when we hear music. Obviously everyone doesn’t like everything. Nevertheless, no matter who you are, music or a song is going to make you feel something. For a greater part of people, most tunes conjure good feelings. They can make you revert to a specific time in your life whether it is positive or negative, and give you a chance to reflect on that period. Others like to listen to music because of the era it was fashioned by, even though they may not have lived it. An additional and I feel universal reason why nearly the whole human race listens to music is because it sounds good.

Have you ever heard anyone say, “I can’t stand that song” and yet the very next thing they’ll do is mimic the very one? I get one of the biggest thrills when I see my mom listening to Al Green, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin or Janet Jackson (“Alright” to be exact). There are many different genres of music: country, R&B, hip-hop, rap, soul, pop and more. However, despite its various facets, music has the widespread power to evoke any emotion out of any one person at any moment and that’s what I’ll continue to love about it. So, what song are you listening to?
